In the men's event, the first round draws where held in Hells Mouth on the Saturday afternoon in slightly larger onshore conditions which where difficult, but luckily the sun was still shinning.
The sell-out Saturday night party was held at Abersoch Powerboat Club with musical entertainment provided by Joel "Chuckbuddies" Erith, followed by the Abersoch Allstars Group of Chris & Leigh Hookes, Dan & Dom Williams and Jonny Robinson. Lots of money has been raised for charity from the ticket money for the party and the entry fees. The final figure will be posted this week and will be split equally between the Air Ambulance and Abersoch RNLI.
With some sore heads on a rainy Sunday morning, we turned up a little sceptical when we first clapped eyes on half-a-foot Porth Ceiriad, but as the guys at West Coast kept saying, the surf picked up and he sun came out. The semis got under way in a fun 2 foot left under the cliff, and the field got narrowed down to a final between Phil Wood, Danny Oldfield, Stef Harkon and last years winner Simon Turner. By this time, the little left hand wedge was firing and the competitors where surfing well. Stef Harkon was putting in some solid back-hand turns as was Simon Turner. Phil Wood was also impressing with some nice off-the-tops and backhand-airs, along with Danny Oldfield surfing strong and taking full advantage of this fore-hand left. It was a tough final to judge and the results where as follows.
Men's Open:
1st Danny Oldfield. 2nd Phil Wood. 3rd Stef Harkon.
4th Simon Turner
